PLENTY OF BOTTLE: The Lovely Bones actor Rose McIver signs a gold leaf-coated jeroboam of champagne at last night’s launch party before Fashion Week’s official start today. Once the bottle has been signed by celebrities, it will be auctioned for Oxfam New Zealand.

Source | The event was all about bubbles but The Lovely Bones actress Rose McIver was talking bananas.

McIver was among a group of celebrities – including All Black Dan Carter, Boy director Taika Waititi and America’s Next Top Model winner Krista White – to sign a limited edition hand-crafted gold leaf jeroboam of champagne at last night’s invitation-only launch of the Moet & Chandon Lounge at New Zealand Fashion Week, which begins today.

Valued at $3000 unsigned, the jeroboam is the first of its type in the country and will be auctioned with all proceeds going to Oxfam New Zealand.

“I’ve long admired Oxfam and was particularly inspired by their efforts to support fair-trade bananas in New Zealand, something I strongly advocate,” McIver said.

Oxfam is also supported by actress Scarlett Johansson, who was the first star to sign a golden jeroboam for charity. Kirsten Dunst and Juliette Binoche have also signed one of the bottles.

McIver wore an oyster-coloured pleated dress by Juliette Hogan, who will be showing on the catwalk tomorrow.

Film producer Niki Caro was not at the launch but will sign the bottle today.

This will be Fashion Week’s tenth year and more than 40 designers will be showing.

As the fashion industry goes, there was some drama at the launch. An unidentified young woman fainted during the opening ceremony speeches. Fashion Week is obviously too much for some, even on day one.

DIARY

What’s hot: Wellington labels. We spotted actor-director Taika Waititi in white tobe trainers with their distinctive blue soles; and designer clothes horse Petra Bagust started the week wearing an Alexandra Owen dress to the Qantas Film and Television Awards.

What’s not: The stress a fire alarm and hotel evacuation brings when your entire clothing collection is in said hotel and 20 firefighters armed with axes storm the building. Luckily for Deborah Sweeney and Margi Robertson of Nom*d, it was a false alarm at The Quadrant in Auckland on Sunday night.

Whisper: AgResearch held a security meeting with Fashion Week event organisers to ensure the venue is secure for its “science in wool” runway show on Thursday. When AgResearch showed two years ago, anti-GM protesters caused a bit of a ruckus and formed a picket line outside the venue.

Fashion emergency: Trelise Cooper has usually sold her collection to buyers by now but she’s had to push all her appointments back. Despite designing the collection “earlier than ever before”, she’s been held up waiting for samples to arrive from her overseas manufacturer. Let’s hope they get here before her show tomorrow.

Quote of the day: “I don’t go around to all the parties. I just go home, watch Shortland St and eat KFC.” Stylist Dan Ahwa.

Best goodie bag: The official delegate bag wins the prize for being the heaviest but not the prettiest. The cheap white carry bag will probably only get reused for carrying groceries. A bit of a shame for an event celebrating its 10th birthday.

Celebrity front row: All Blacks Dan Carter and Ali Williams, actresses Rose McIver and Anna Hutchison, and Waititi – the celebs turned out for the opening of the Moet & Chandon Lounge in the Viaduct Harbour Marine Village. This do preceded the official Fashion Week opening party, which was attended by Miami celebrity publicist Brian Long, Real Housewives of New York stylist Derek Warburton, and Clif Loftin, who’s blogging for Coco Perez.

On the catwalk today: Starfish, Andrea Moore, Adrian Hailwood, Kathryn Wilson, Juliette Hogan, Sera Lily, PWC New Generation Show and Zambesi.

Who’s showing tomorrow: Alexandra Owen, World, Trelise Cooper, Jimmy D, Ruby, Sabatini White, Nom*d and New Zealand Weddings Bridal Collection.
