As most of you are probably aware of, the annual San Diego Comic Con is held this weekend! Rose is set to attend for her third year in row. The SDCC weekend has become a big one here at Rose McIver Online and in the Rose community, and we can’t wait for it to start! Photos, videos, information… All to be expected – and in big batches 😉 While we eagerly await the convention, we decided to warm up by taking a look at the last two years’…

San Diego Comic-Con International is a multi-genre entertainment and comic convention held annually in San Diego, California. It was founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans, which included Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger, and Mike Towry; later, it was called the “San Diego Comic Book Convention”. The name, as given on its website, is Comic-Con International: San Diego; but it is commonly known simply as Comic-Con or the San Diego Comic-Con or “SDCC”. It is a four-day event (Thursday–Sunday) held during the summer at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California. On the Wednesday evening prior to the official opening of the event, there is a preview for professionals, exhibitors, and select guests pre-registered for all four days.

(Photo left: Rose at the Batman 75th Anniversary And ‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ Unveil ‘Cape/Cowl/Create’ Art Exhibit at SDCC. More photos here.) When it was announced Rose would attend the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, the excitement was big. They were currently working on the first season of iZombie, and fans were looking forward to receive more information about the upcoming show. It was apparent that it already had many fans, even before the pilot episode had aired! Rose went to San Diego with her co-stars David Anders, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley and Malcolm Goodwin, and the show creators Diane Ruggiero and Rob Thomas.

In their iZombie panel we learned a lot of fun facts, such as; Rose was the 100th actress to audition for the part! We also found out more about the show premise, the weekly format and how Rose found it easy to play a zomibe, but difficult to play a med student because of the vocabulary. The reviews were clear; this was a group of actors with a lot of charm, and they did amazingly at building up the hype around the show.

We were also given a galore of photos, making the weekend even better! Rose attended many different events during the convention, even a couple of portrait sessions. She wore different outfits to almost all of them – let’s take a look at her 2014 SDCC looks…

(In the 4th photo, Rose is wearing a Carlo Pazolini Handbag in black/white, a Sans Souci Blue & White stripe skirt and a AQ AQ Monica Halter Crop Top with Racer Front.)

It’s safe to say she looked stunning in all of them. But which of her 2014 looks were your favorite? Vote below…

Rose’s second San Diego Comic Con was held almost a month after the season finale of the first iZombie season in 2016. By then, iZombie had built up quite an impressive fanbase, and everyone was buzzing for the convention to kick off! And what an amazing start to the weekend they got… The cast attended the MTV Fandom Awards in San Diego the day before the convention, where they picked up the award “Best New Fandom”. (To the right: Photo of Rose dedicating the award to the fans. All photos of the cast accepting it can be found in our gallery here.)

And then the fun began! Unlike in 2014, Rose only attended the convention on one day (July 10). But oh did she keep busy! She managed to attend the iZombie panel and fan signing, appeared at SiriusXMs EW Radio Show, was in the Photo Booth and did a total of 3 different portrait session, visited the Nintendo Lounge on the TV Guide Magazine Yacht, and last but not least: the Warner Bros. Television’s Comic-Con 2015 Cocktail Media Mixer (with Leah Pipes from The Originals and Emily Bett Rickards from Arrow). And then there was all the interviews… (you can check out screen captures from pretty much all the interviews Rose made in our master post here)

One kind soul uploaded the entire iZombie panel to youtube for us, so that we who were sadly stuck on the other site of the world and couldn’t attend in person, could watch it! If you haven’t seen it before, make sure to check it out below… And if you have, maybe rewatching it as we wait for this year’s iZombie panel could be fun?

SDCC 14: An Extended Look at iZombie

i: Zombie is headed to The CW for a midseason premiere, and executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright and cast members Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, and David Anders brought an extended look of the series to Comic-Con. There were initially going to air the pilot, but recent casting changes altered their plans. The 10-15 minutes of footage introduced the basics of the series and showed it’s a zombie show unlike any other.

Since Veronica Mars alums are involved, let’s address the elephant in the room. iZombie definitely has similarities to Thomas’ previous series about a sarcastic teenage detective. Rose McIvers plays Liv Moore, a med student who became a zombie during a wild party on a boat. The preview showcased the character’s humor, how she’s dealing with the changes, and how she develops psychic-ish powers. When she eats a corpse’s brains, she channels that person’s memories and even physical abilities. She uses her skills to help catch murderers. She’s so charming that I already want to be her best friend.

The dialogue was snappy, smart, and reminiscent of Mars, but Liv is clearly a different person. She’s surrounded by a pal and co-worker in the morgue who figures out her secret and wants to help cure her (Rahul Kohli), a detective who seems to believe and put stock in her psychic skills early on (Malcolm Goodwin, who channeled Shaft for the role), an ex-fiancé she still loves (Robert Buckley), and of course, there’s a villainous zombie (David Anders). Liv will be solving a mystery of the week, but the series has bigger arcs.

Rob Thomas said “People often put Veronica Mars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the same category, and I would say that iZombie falls closer to Buffy.” He stated there will be more action in iZombie than in Veronica Mars, but that they definitely will be living in a dramatic world with a sense of humor.

The television show is similar to the comic it’s based on, but it’s by no means a straight adaptation. They took the general idea from the iZombie comic and added more. They had Liv work in the police morgue so she has a constant supply of cases to solve and brains to eat. Thomas confirmed that iZombie will be a straight zombie show without incorporating other monsters seen in the comics.

While Liv is dealing with her zombie problems, her humanity is still there. One scene featured Liz weighing a brain and mixing it with noodles and hot sauce for lunch. It’s one of many moments that showed the endearing side of the character. McIver says, “What’s fun about this character is that she’s still trying to be a human.” She added playing the zombie side of Liv is easier than portraying the medical student part.

As far as the powers she gains when she eats the brains, Thomas said both personality and physical traits from the corpse transfer. “If she ate the brain of a concert pianist, she’s going to be able to do that. She also picks up some negative traits. She becomes a kleptomaniac in the pilot. She’s always inheriting some qualities of the deceased.” He stressed that the memories and powers she receives from any given brain never completely takes over Liv’s free will, and that she’ll retain everything from a given brain for as long as she keeps eating it.

Liv doesn’t have it easy. She will have to fight to keep her zombie desires under control. We saw a peek at her going full zombie in the preview, but she’s able to pull back. Thomas said the change is triggered by adrenaline, and she won’t be able to turn it on and off. He made compared the effect to what the Bruce Banner goes through with Hulk. Apparently, the line “Liv Smash” got cut from the pilot episode.

As mentioned, the series does have a mystery of the week vibe, but that’s not all. Thomas emphasized there will be cases to investigate but that they want to deliver on the zombie premise. There will be big zombie plotlines like finding the survivors of the party massacre when Liv turned and Liv figuring out she might be the lynchpin in preventing the zombie apocalypse.

And if blood and guts isn’t your cup of tea, don’t worry. Thomas said, “We’re never going to be The Walking Dead in terms of gore. It will not be shotgun blast to the head after shotgun blast to the head.”
